  • 1- Melbourne maintains the title for the second year running of the “World's Most Liveable City” and has rated perfect scores for infrastructure, healthcare and education in the latest Economist Intelligence Unit liveability survey.

  • 2- Melbourne is one of the most multicultural cities in the world and is the city with the second largest greek population in the world, after Athens.

  • 3- Luna Park in in Melbourne's bayside suburb of St Kilda is the world's oldest amusement park under private management (opened in 1912 on the site of "Dreamland" which closed in 1909). The Scenic Railway is a replica of the roller-coaster built for The Great Durbar Exhibition of Old Bombay for the visit of King George V in 1911.

  • 4- Under local Melbourne by-laws, it is an offence to drive your goat harnessed or attached to a vehicle in a public place. It's also illegal to sing a rude or bawdy song within earshot of another person.

  • 5- Long before Melbourne was called Batmania after one of its founders, John Batman.

  • 6- Melbourne's famous tramway system is the largest outside Europe and the fourth largest in the entire world. It stretches along 244 kilometres of track and has 450 trams.

  • 7- The largest stained glass ceiling of the world is in Melbourne, at The National Gallery of Victoria. It is 51 m long by 15 m wide.

  • 8- Melbourne is the only city in the world that has five international standard sporting facilities on the fringe of its central business district. In 2010, it was named the World's Ultimate Sports City for the third consecutive time.

  • 9- On 21 April 1856, history was made when an 8 hour day was introduced into the building trades in Melbourne after a struggle between building tradesmen and contractors. This triumph established the 8 hour working day, for the first time anywhere in the world. This achievement formed Australia's reputation as a workingman's paradise. A 888 monument (8 hours work, 8 hours recreation, 8 hours rest) was erected at the corner of Russell and Victoria Streetsl to pay homage to this victory.

  • 10- Melbourne is the "Fox Capital" of the western world, with 6-23 foxes every square kilometer in the metropolitan area.
